Summary

This report analyzes theprotection risks to which children are exposed in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in North Kivu, in a context marked by armed conflicts, population displacements and humanitarian crises. The study is part of the projectRESPECT, funded by ECHO and implemented by the TEARFUND, STREET CHILD consortium and their partner Umoja in Action, in the health zones ofKibirizi (Rutshuru) et Kayna (Lubero). The main objective is to identify threats to the protective environment of children, in particularchildren associated with armed forces and groups (EAFGA), unaccompanied or separated children, as well as those exposed to different forms of violence.

The research aims to understand theserious violations of children's rights, such as killings, kidnappings, recruitment into armed groups, sexual violence, destruction of schools and obstacles to access to humanitarian aid. It also examines thepsychosocial consequences on children, difficulties in accessing education and health services, as well as existing community mechanisms to prevent and respond to violence.

To achieve these objectives, the study adopted aparticipatory methodology combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. It was based on a documentary review, surveys of213 key informants(including children and adults), semi-structured interviews, focus groups with boys, girls and parents, as well as community observations. The data was collected using digital tools likeKoboCollectand analyzed to establish a risk profile and propose mitigation measures.

The results highlight ahigh level of vulnerability of children, marked by violence, psychological trauma, difficulties in accessing social services and the persistence of the phenomenon of children associated with armed groups. The report also highlights the importance ofcommunity protection mechanismsand recommends strengthening prevention, psychosocial support and reintegration strategies for children affected by conflicts.

The study emphasizes the need tostrengthening child protection systems, improve coordination between humanitarian and community actors, and develop sustainable measures to reduce risks and protect the fundamental rights of children in areas affected by conflict.
