Areas of Expertise

State of play and Land Survey in North Kivu province. Environmental and ecological theme within the framework of the INCLUSIVE TRANSITION FOR development project (TRIDE) east OF CONGOThe study carried out in the province of North Kivu was part of the land governance reforms initiated in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the implementation of the Provincial Land Intervention Strategies (SPIF) aligned with the National Land Policy Document (DPFN). It was conducted as part of the TRIDE program, implemented by ZOA, with the technical support of Congo Initiative – Université Chrétienne Bilingue. The main objective was to analyse the ecological and environmental component of the land sector, including the interactions between land management, environmental sustainability and climate change challenges in the localities of Kashenda and Bishange (Bahunde chiefdom, Masisi territory).Thestudy adopted a mixed methodological approach, combining qualitative methods (interviews, focus groups) and quantitative (household survey). A sample of approximately 200 households was selected from a population of over 70,000. Data was collected using KoboCollect and analyzed with software such as Stata and NVivo, while building on a literature review of existing legal and policy frameworks.

Results & Achievements

The results showed that the localities studied faced strong environmental degradation, mainly related to soil erosion, deforestation, overexploitation of agricultural land and mining. Soil and water pollution has been widely reported by local populations, while deforestation and unsustainable agricultural practices have exacerbated the loss of soil fertility and the reduction of biodiversity. Mining activities also contributed to water contamination and ecosystem degradation. The study also revealed low knowledge of land and environmental policies by local communities, as well as limited implementation of these policies on the ground. Although the populations recognized the relevance of the existing policy frameworks, their implementation remained insufficient due to the lack of institutional monitoring, informal mining, non-compliance with environmental obligations by some operators and the context of insecurity in the region. In conclusion, the study highlighted the need to strengthen land governance and the integration of environmental considerations, including through improved community awareness, stricter control of mining and agricultural activities, and increased involvement of local people, women and youth in sustainable land and natural resource management processes.
